2007, THINGS HAPPENED
ENGINEERED AIR THEATRE 2006
2005 DAWSON CITY MUSIC FESTIVAL
It happens every July in Dawson City, Yukon, a former goldrush town with a population of 2000. We were blown away by our time there. The scenery is amazing. The sun doesn't go down. The people are great. Above all, the festival is a hoot. Enjoy these snaps with accompanying commentary. To the DCMF: thanks for inviting us! Also, a special thanks go to the Westminster Hotel and all the staff at the Pit!

Twisted Roots Underground (also known as other cool muscians who travel in our cirlcles) Mayor Matt Allen - A Winnipeg Tom Waits and Nick Cave devotee and a hell of a cook who takes his time. Michael Jerome Browne - Montreal's master of old time music. He's been an inspiration since seeing him at the Ness Creek Festival. Eugene Chadbourne - Author of "They Can Make It Rain Bombs" and granddaddy to the twisted roots scene. Ora Cogan - Armed with an amazing voiced and haunting tunes, she's an up and comer from Vancouver. The Cracker Cats - Saskatoon's estrogen-powered, raw country trio. The Creaking Tree String Quartet - These boys can play straightfaced. Bluegrass, jazz, and chamber music thrown in a blender. Jay Crocker - He's got a big band, a really big band, and chops-a-plenty. Crooked Jades - Y'all like old timey and melancholy? This San Francisco combo is for you. Mark Davis - An Old Reliable front man more than capable of writing an introspective tune. The D. Rangers - The baddest bluegrass band on the continent lives in Winnipeg! Dyad - Vancouver's Dock Boggs specialists. Ask Shiho about the Japanese bluegrass scene. Who knew? The Earl Brothers - It doesn't get anymore high and lonesome than this. Julian Fauth - He plays the blues and gets it. Killer piano player, guitarist, and songwriter. Ghostkeeper - Shane Ghostkeeper has one of the most unique approaches to the blues we've heard in a long while. He plays cool alt rock, too. The Hackensaw Boys - One of most ass kicking sets witnessed at the 2007 Open House Festival. Hillstomp - Portland, Oregan's dirty, dirty, bucket-bashing blues duo. Shuyler Jansen - Space rock and country fused together by another Old Reliable alumnus. James Keelaghan - Bob's bro and another godfather to the Canadian roots scene. Check out the new Compadres disc. Little Miss Higgins - A married couple who dig into the same pre-WWII blues we do. Pete plays drums on their latest CD. Carolyn Mark - You know her. You love her. A fine guest to have on a long drive to Calgary. Matt Masters - No, sir, he's a country and western singer. Lorrie Matheson - A Calgary singer-songwriter with a punk rock soul. Romi Mayes - An alt-country diva who will greet you with a big smile and a cuss word. The Moulettes - Straight outta Brighton! Nathan - Sweet harmonies and dark lyrics. Seemingly incongruous, but so right. Scott Nolan - Gritty, electrified, roots songwritin'. Scott is largely responsible for introducing us to all things good in Winnipeg. The Perpetrators - Raw Winnipeg blues rock featuring the sly axework of Jason Nowicki. Matt Olah and Cowpuncher - Pete Balkwill used to play with them. Po' Girl - Old friends featuring members of the Be Good Tanyas. Ramblin' Ambassadors - Great instrumental, reverb rock from the guitar that brought you Huevos Rancheros. Lord knows we've done enough gigs with them. Tivia: Pete played with Brent in the Will back in the 1980s. Rum Runner - Punk rock and Pogues. Yesssssssss!!!!!!!! Seasick Steve - One of the most colourful dudes we have ever met. He's no slouch at playing swampy, John Lee Hooker influenced electric blues. Sick and Indigent Song Club Lookin' for old timey Yank music in Dublin, Ireland on a Monday night? Look no further. The Silverhearts - Peterborough's best party, making the old new again. Sadly defunct. United Steel Workers of Montreal - Ass-kicking, rogue folk and trad country. They're fierce! We said fierce! We mean it. Chad Van Gaalen - Indie rock, schmindie rock. Chad writes a great tune. He's a natural. Ben Weaver - Kinda like an Americana Nick Cave except he's American which Nick Cave isn't. That's a bad comparison. We collaborated like hell for an hour at the Winnipeg Folk Fest. William Elliot Whitmore If ever we had a musical doppelganger, it's William. It was damn good to play together at the Calgary Folk Fest. None of us exploded.
